Timeline: November 1863 (3 months before the OVA)
Spoilers: naught but Kenshin's earliest past (not the OVA stuff)

DISCLAIMER: Duo Maxwell property of Sotsu, Bandai and whoever. Himura Kenshin property of Nobuhiro Watsuki. Logan property of Marvel Comics, used here just because I couldn't be bothered to think up an OMC ^_^ This work uses them without permission, not for profit and as artistic inspiration

Notes: I use more Japanese than usual here, probably because I watched Kenshin with Shinsengumi subtitles, which leave many words unchanged, only translating them the first time (like "Aku. Soku. Zan." ^_^V). Full dictionary at the end of each part. Also some history and geography may be unaccurate -- licentia poetica :-P

This fic is dedicated to SeimeiNoMiko... yep, this is what you get for setting plot bunnies on me!

The Three Cranes Nomiya, Kenshin quickly decided, was not his kind of place. To the left, drunken samurai shouted for more sake. On the opposite side of the common room some minor officials of the Bakufu harassed a serving girl.

Soon enough, he thought, someone would throw something. Then it would degenerate into an all-out fight. He hoped his contact would have the good sense to show up before that happened. For the time being, he kept close to the wall, taking up a strategic position.

A hand was laid on his shoulder.

Half a breath later the assailant was pushed against a wall with Himura's wakizashi at his throat. In the din and darkness, no-one else noticed.

The Battousai regarded his oponent. A less-observant person might have taken the slim figure for a girl, but Himura was not fooled by the pretty face, large violet eyes or the thick braid falling past the boy's waist.

Besides, the body pressed against his own was most definitely male.

The boy flashed him a dazzling smile that was half sensuous, half mischievious, despite the blade against his neck. He looked about fifteen - half a year younger than the Battousai.

"You aren't scared." The hitokiri was intrigued by this.

"Nothing scares Shinigami."

Gold eyes widened in recognition of the code phrase.

"Mind letting me down? There's a place nearby where we can talk more comfortably... not that I'm complaining, you know." The braided boy winked and wriggled ever-so-slighty against the Battousai.

Himura backed away. They quickly left the nomiya, falling into the embrace of the evening Osaka mist.

"By the way," 'Shinigami' said, "what's your name? You're far too cute for me to call you just 'Battousai', you know!"

"Himura Kenshin."

"Cool! I'm Duo."
